LEGENDARY DJ CREWS & DIRECT RECORD SHOPS
Invisibl Skratch Piklz
Turntablism & DMC Routines
Founded in the Bay Area by DJ Qbert, Mix Master Mike, and DJ Apollo (later joined by Shortkut and D-Styles), Invisibl Skratch Piklz transformed the turntable from a playback device into a lead jazz-fusion instrument — pioneering the band concept where one DJ scratches drums, another plays basslines, and another solos.
The X-Ecutioners (X-Men)
Turntablism & DMC Routines
Originally formed in New York City in 1989 as the X-Men to rival West Coast scratch crews, Grandmaster Roc Raida, Rob Swift, Total Eclipse, and Mista Sinista turned beat juggling into high-impact musical composition and battle warfare.
The World Famous Beat Junkies
Turntablism & DMC Routines
Founded in 1992 by J.Rocc, Melo-D, and Rhettmatic — and soon joined by DJ Babu (who coined the word 'Turntablist' in 1995) and Shortkut — The Beat Junkies bridge razor-sharp ITF/DMC battle routines with deep soul, funk, and hip-hop party-rocking.
Bronx Founding Fathers & Herculords
Bronx & Club Foundations
On August 11, 1973, at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, DJ Kool Herc isolated the instrumental drum break using two copies of the same record ('The Merry-Go-Round'). Grandmaster Flash engineered the Quick Mix Theory & Clock Theory, Grand Wizzard Theodore invented the scratch in 1975, and Afrika Bambaataa expanded the crate across electro, funk, and global breaks.
Golden-Era Boom-Bap & MPC/SP-1200 Architects
MPC & SP-1200 Beatmaking
Armed with the 12-bit crunch of the E-mu SP-1200, Akai S950 low-pass filter, and Akai MPC60/MPC3000 swing, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Diamond D, and Lord Finesse defined the sonic architecture of New York Golden-Era Hip-Hop.
Low-End Crate Alchemists & Unquantized Beat Konductas
MPC & SP-1200 Beatmaking
Rejecting rigid computer quantization, J Dilla turned off time-correction on his Akai MPC3000 to invent a human, drunken-time feel that reshaped modern music, while Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, and The Alchemist dug into Brazilian, psych-rock, library, and soul records worldwide.
